Reading your ancestry

SOSA numbering

Locate an ancestor

Enter a SOSA number to find its generation, branch and path through your ancestry.

Your ancestry at a glance

Each grandparent opens a branch: Marquis (4), Morel (5), Valot (6) and Magnien (7). The ranges locate each branch within a generation.

Theoretical ancestor slots and calculated branch ranges
GenerationPossible slotsMarquis · 4Morel · 5Valot · 6Magnien · 7

One number, one path

The reference person (the “de cujus”) is number 1. For a person numbered n, the father is 2n and the mother is 2n + 1. Apart from the reference person, even numbers represent fathers and odd numbers represent mothers.

A number identifies a position relative to the reference person. Changing that person changes the numbering. Descendants and spouses outside this ancestry do not receive a SOSA number.

G1 is the reference person; G2 is their parents. Ancestry degree 1 therefore corresponds to G2. When branches meet, the same ancestor can occupy several numbered slots.

Read the binary path

The number of binary digits gives the generation. The first digit is always 1: the reference person. Each following digit is one step back: 0 for father, 1 for mother.

114 is 1110010 in binary: G7, Magnien branch. Its path is reference person → mother → mother → father → father → mother → father.

The mathematics of ancestry

Let n be a SOSA number and g its generation, starting at G1. The floor brackets ⌊ ⌋ mean rounding down to a whole number.

Ancestor slots / first numberN=2g−1
Last numbernmax=2g−1
Generation of number ng=⌊log2n⌋+1
Branch root, from G3b=⌊n2g−3⌋
Slots per branch, from G3w=2g−3
Range of branch b[b×w,(b+1)×w−1]

From G3, b is 4, 5, 6 or 7: the root of one of the four grandparent branches. The ranges describe theoretical slots, rather than distinct people or complete recorded generations.
